When you learn about meditation for the first time, you will probably confuse it for a trance state. Most of us have. This brings around the question, is meditation a trance state?

Trance, on the other hand, is a certain state of mind. In this state of mind, you are not fully asleep and you are not fully aware. In this state, you focus on one thing. It is a state of mind that does not allow you to deal with reality. When hypnotized, you get into a trance state.

When in this state, people do not see or hear anything going on around them. However, they can perceive and hear their main focus. A person can still move around in this state.

Do they differ?

To be honest, these two are different. First, the trance state is not an intentional act. It is similar to mediumship. You get into that state unintentionally.

However, you can get to a trance-like state during meditation. Meditation can be a great way to achieve a trance state. You will need to go deeper in your mind. You also have to dig deeper into your emotions and your soul.

A person can assume that he or she is meditating, while actually in a trance state. When doing meditation or yoga, a person can enter a hypnotic state.

The Main Differences

First, when in a trance, you are not yourself. Whereas in meditation, you try to figure out your inner self more.

For you to benefit from meditation, you have to be mindful. Unconsciousness as in a trance state is not recognized as meditation.

Trance is also different from mindfulness since you are unaware of what is happening close to you.

The experience of trance is often described as feeling dreamlike, dreamy, or dissociative. For some people, memories accessed during trance tend to be more vivid and emotive than those accessed during waking life; for others, they may be entirely new memories that have been created by the individual at the moment. While the content of trance-related memories can vary widely, they often include elements of past lives, otherworldly experiences, or spiritual journeys.
